South Holland hosts a variety of events throughout the year that encourage residents to meet one another and develop relationships, foster community pride, celebrate various holidays, and highlight important issues.
Residents are encouraged to become an active participant in the community. It can start with the following events:
Mayor’s Coffees
Quarterly
Informal gatherings that are held quarterly at the Community Center to give residents an opportunity to meet with the Mayor and other Village officials to share their comments and concerns.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Celebration
3rd Saturday in January
This celebration honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with song and scripture. Held at a South Holland church.
Community E-Waste Collection
4th Saturday in March, July, and October
E-Waste Collection events are on the fourth Saturday in March, July, and October from 8:00am to Noon in the rear parking lot of the South Holland Public Library. Electronic waste, or “e-waste”, is known as old electronic devices that are broken, outdated, discarded, or at the end of the useful life. This includes cell phones, laptops, desktop computers, monitors, tablets, PDAs, televisions, printers, fax machines, scanners, and many other electronic devices.
Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast
1st Thursday in May
This annual breakfast is sponsored by the South Holland Ministerial Association.
Lions Club Pancake Day
1st Saturday in May
This event is held at the Community Center. Enjoy your breakfast and fellowship with friends and neighbors!
Arbor Day Celebration
2nd Saturday in May
Each year we celebrate Arbor Day with a ceremonial planting of a tree.
Student Government Day
3rd Monday in May
Local Junior High students chair the Village Board meeting.
South Holland Municipal Band Concerts
Memorial Day through Labor Day
Our very own Municipal Band performs a series of concerts over the summer. Their season begins with the Memorial Day celebration and concludes with the Heritage Festival. The concerts are usually held at the bandstand at Veterans Park on various Thursday evenings.
Memorial Day Parade and Remembrance Ceremony
Memorial Day – Last Monday in May
This annual parade that honors the men and women who served in the military and made the ultimate sacrifice runs down South Park Ave. It begins at 11:00am at 170th Street and finishes at Veterans Park. Following the Parade at approximately 12:30pm at Veterans Park will be a Remembrance Ceremony.
Movies in the Park
Three movies shown during the summer season
Join us for our free Saturday Night movies in the park! Family-friendly movies on the big screen at Veterans Park (160th Place & South Park). Movie nights are sponsored by the Village of South Holland. Concessions will be open throughout the movie. Remember to bring chairs and/or blankets!
Independence Day Celebration
4th of July
The July 4th Celebration begins with a Rib Fest Contest at Veterans Park, followed by a full day of fun, food, and games for ALL AGES. The celebration concludes with the BEST fireworks display in Suburban Chicagoland at dusk!
Paarlberg Fest
Labor Day
Come to Paarlberg Park for a full day of activities for the whole family! Tour the historical Paarlberg home and barn. Crafters, food vendors, South Holland Garden Club will be selling tulip and daffodil bulbs, Joe Spiller the Magician, DJ music by 219 Productions, Line dancing by Janell, and even an old fashioned penny scramble for the kids. The finale of the day, music by the South Holland Municipal Band.
Heritage Haul – 5K / 10K / Half Marathon
3rd Saturday in September
A 5K run or walk, 10K or Half Marathon run through scenic South Holland. This event raises money for local charities. Open to all ages!
South Holland Master Chorale
October thru May
The 100+ member chorus performs locally in the community, as well as, throughout the Chicago south suburbs and Northwest Indiana, with orchestras including the Chicago Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the LaPorte Symphony, the Illinois Philharmonic, and the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra, and undertook a successful European concert tour to Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic in 2011. Artists’ Gallery
1st weekend in October
Come to the Community Center and check out artists’ presentations by South Holland residents. Paintings, photography, scale models, sculptures and more!
Harvest Party
October – Thursday before Halloween
Hosted at the Community Center, the annual Harvest Party includes costume judging, games, candy bags, pumpkin decorating for children ages 3 to 12, and much more.
Veterans Day Service
Veterans Day – November 11
South Holland VFW Post 9964 hosts a Veterans Day Service on November 11 at 11:00am in Veterans Park at the Monument. This service honors all those who were called and served their country.
Winter Wonderland
1st Friday in December
Activities include tree lighting, Santa visits, train and trolley rides, face painting, family-friendly activities, live music, holiday carolers, refreshments, treats, and more.
